CancerBACUP – £5,000
CancerBACUP was set up twenty years ago. Their experience shows that patients and families have unmet information needs and they offer a national freephone helpline, a range of information booklets and factsheets along with a comprehensive website. The Foundation’s money will enable Cancer BACUP to publish a revised edition of the information booklet on Cancer and Complementary Therapies. Marie Curie – £10,000
We are sure that everyone has heard of Marie Curie Cancer Care and their emblem of a daffodil. They offer a completely free service to cancer suffers and families alike. The Caron Keating Foundation has donated money specifically for their ‘Living Rooms Appeal’ for the Marie Curie Centre in Belfast. They wish to extend this centre with seventeen brand new, purpose built patient rooms, all with more space, more facilities and more comfort. £10,000 will pay for four specialised chairs and the Foundation wish this centre all the best with their wonderful work. www.mariecurie.org.uk

Hartlepool Hospice – £5,000
This hospice in Hartlepool receives just 30% of its funding from the local Primary Care Trust. They are a 10 bed in patient unit with an out patient unit, HomeLink outreach service and 24 hour helpline. Along with conventional medical treatment, they offer joint complementary therapy for patients suffering from any terminal illness and gives them the opportunity to focus on something enjoyable which may distract them from their everyday pain and symptoms. Family members are also helped with the therapies which can help to alleviate emotional strain, physical demands of caring, uncertainty and fear together with altered roles and lifestyles. The money from the Caron Keating Foundation will help fund a registered nurse trained in complementary therapy for a day a week along with the consumables necessary. www.hartlepoolhospice.co.uk
Martlets Hospice Ltd – £5,000
Martlets Hospice in Hove sought a grant to enable them to extend the provision of Art Therapy for their terminally ill patients. They have over 400 patients referred to the Hospice every year and their aim is to help patients achieve a quality of life within the limits of their illness. Art Therapy is used as a tool to explore and share many difficult issues faced by people with terminal illness. The Martlets Hospice offer this service for two days a week and they are now wish to extend this to four days a week. We hope that the money given by the Caron Keating Foundation can help with this laudable aim. www.themartlets.co.uk
Bosum Buddies – £18,500
Bosum Buddies is just eight years old and they have been fundraising for a Faxiton specimen X-ray system which enables biopsies taken from the breast of a breast cancer sufferer more accurate and less of an ordeal than it has been in the past. The money donated by the Caron Keating Foundation will pay for one of these machines which will be used by Avon Breast Screening Service in the Bristol area
The Rosemary Foundation – £10,000
The Rosemary Foundation is a Hospice at Home organisation in Petersfield, Hampshire. They offer hands-on nursing and caring support for the terminally ill patient within their own home. They offer this service on a 24 hour, 365 days a year basis. The money allocated to them by the Caron Keating Foundation is to pay for a part-time Carer for a year.
Beechwood Cancer Care Centre – £2,500
Beechwood Cancer Care Centre offers many support services to cancer patients, their carers and family members. Their motto is ‘Living Positively with Cancer’ and they have a ‘Positive Living’ programme run daily from their centre in Stockport. The money given by the Caron Keating Foundation will fund the cost of a therapist one day a week for a year.
The Lavender Touch – £5,000
The Lavender Touch is a charity within the Scottish Borders. They provide aromatherapy treatment for people whose lives have been affected by cancer. These treatments are given to patients within their own homes or local health centre. £5,000 from the Caron Keating Foundation will help with the provision of this service which reaches out to approximately 100 patients a year.
The Pickering Drop In Centre – £10,000
This Cancer Drop-in Centre has recently opened its doors. They are in Tunbridge Wells, Kent and offer a centre where cancer patients and their family and friends can go for support and advice. They offer complementary therapies, counselling or just a cup of tea and a friendly chat. It is staffed by volunteers and our money will help with the extension of this service enabling it to be open daily to everyone in the community of all ages.
Cancer Care & Haematology Fund – £10,000
The Cancer Care & Haematology Unit is attached to Stoke Mandeville Hospital and has a large chemotherapy unit where patients can have treatment during the day and return to their homes in the evening. Many different types of cancers and patients of all ages are catered for within this unit, as well as support for family and carers. The need for this service has grown over the years and is now housed in a new building. The money from the Caron Keating Foundation will help develop this building and the equipment needed.
Big C – £20,000
Big C is a local independent cancer charity based in Norwich. They provide support services such as counselling, benefit and nutrition advice, support groups and an extensive information library. This is a free walk-in service for patients and their families. The money from the Caron Keating Foundation with pay for ‘The Caron Keating Counselling Room’ which will provide a warm, relaxing, supportive environment where people can discuss their worries and have an opportunity for peace and calm. www.thebigappeal.co.uk
Cancer Resource Centre – £23,000
The Cancer Resource Centre is in South West London. They help anyone who has been affected by cancer. This can include family members, friends or health care professionals. Services offered include healing, massage, therapy sessions and a home visiting service. The Caron Keating Foundation will fund a Support Officer post for one year. The Support Officers are the bridge between clients, therapies and administration and are the first point of contact for the majority of centre users and, are of vital importance to both the potential patient and the reputation of the Centre.www.cancer-resource-centre.org
The Lymphoedema Support Network – £5,000
Lymphoedema is a very real problem with cancer sufferers and it can be difficult to access information and treatment as services for this are very patchy throughout the country. The Lymphoedema Support Network takes a lead role in educating and supporting patients with this condition. They operate a telephone helpline with a series of fact sheets and two self-help videos and the money from the Caron Keating Foundation will help with the funding of these services.www.lymphoedema.org

Purley, Surrey. The centre provides complementary therapies and counselling to those affected by cancer and their families, over a wide area of South London and Surrey. Gloria visited the centre in May to see the work being carried out and was most impressed. Manor Park, London. They offer support, friendship and lots of practical day to day help, like getting to and from hospital for chemotherapy or it could be providing home help when no family support is available. A room in the complementary Therapy Centre is to be named after Caron in her memory.
MacMillan Cancer Relief – £I5,OOO
The donation went towards their ROTHERHAM APPEAL to support a Macmillan Breast Care Nurse Specialist at Rotherham General Hospital. The organisation said that the Caron Keating Foundation support has provided a great boost to the Rotherham Appeal and will help to make a real difference to many women and their families in S. Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for children – £20,000
This amount goes towards a project to provide a log cabin in the grounds of Shimna Valley Holiday House in Newcastle, Co. Down. The log cabin will provide a hangout facility and treatment room for teenagers with cancer. www.nicfc.com
Sarah Lee Trust – £10,000
The centre provides aromatherapy, acupuncture, counselling, reflexology, massage, shiatsu and visualisation. The Caron Keating Foundation donation however will provide new creative therapy sessions. A spokesperson said ‘Group sessions, using creative mediums such as paint, clay and music offers an opportunity for people to explore, express and share thoughts and feelings, sometimes without the need for words in a safe contained environment.’
LADY McADDEN BREAST SCREENING UNIT – £5000
This Essex based charity provides education in breast awareness to women 18 years-old and over and screens by mammography from aged 44 years. They have existed for 28 years, served over 54,000 clients and see 10,000 ladies per year.
THE RAINBOW CENTRE for children affected by cancer and bereavement, Bristol – £6000
The donation will provide for one year the homeopathy support project. The project itself provides consultations and remedies to any sufferer or family member who needs support. Stress, grief and anxiety can also be helped with the right remedy and both adults and children may be offered this valuable help when appropriate.
The Primrose Trust – £20,000
A Kent based charity supplying a breast care centre for women. The Centre has been converted from a chapel with beautiful and tasteful alterations most of which have been donated by local companies and craftsmen. The Caron Keating Foundation grant will be used for equipping a treatment room for breast cancer patients and will be called the Caron Keating Room. www.primeroseorganisation.org.uk
Melanie Beattie Appeal – £10,000
This grant will be used to provide a Comfort System used by the Oncology Department at Clatterbridge Hospital in Liverpool. This is an innovative system of giving local radiotherapy to breast cancer sufferers using a less invasive method than the traditional way which caused less discomfort.
Youth Cancer Trust – £10,000
The Tracy Ann House in Bournemouth has been giving children with cancer traditional holidays by the sea since 1997. Activities for 18 to 25 year olds include rock climbing, donkey riding and playing games on the sand. The young people are allowed to bring a friend or sibling, and they all gain support and friendship from meeting others in the same position as themselves in an independent setting. The grant from the Caron Keating Foundation should fund 20 children for a holiday such as this. www.yct.org.uk
Leukaemia CARE – £4,000
Leukaemia Care in Worcester is a National Charity providing support and care to sufferers of cancer of the blood, leukaemia. The above grant will be used to construct a consulting room in which leukaemia patients can benefit from complementary therapies giving by specialist volunteers. Ian Rennie Hospice – £15,000
The Caron Keating Foundation has given a grant to the Ian Rennie Hospice in order that a specialist palliative nurse can be provided to help out in domiciliary services in the Tring area of Hertfordshire. This nurse will enable more people to stay within their home setting that is often the desire of patients during the final stages of terminal illness. www.irhh.org
C.A.L.L. – £10,000
This Freefone call centre offers practical and emotional help to cancer patients within the Stockport and Greater Manchester area. This valuable service can be extended with the help of the above grant from the Caron Keating Foundation allowing more volunteers to be trained and the phone lines to be open longer hours. www.canceraid.co.uk
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust – £10,000
Lanarkshire is a big country within Scotland and the Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust has volunteer drivers who ferry patients to and from their hospital appointments. This is a valuable service as some distances are not served by public transport. The grant from the Caron Keating Foundation will enable the drivers to continue this thriving facility.
Harlington Hospice – £12,000
Lymphoedema is a uncomfortable and painful side effect from breast cancer. The Harlington Hospice in Middlesex has an expanding Lymphoedema Clinic, which is very busy and necessary. Going to the hospice helps local people avoid having to go into busy London and the grant from the Caron Keating Foundation will fund a Caron Keating Room for the clinic. www.harlingtonhospice.org
The Princess Alice Hospice – £25,000
The Princess Alice Hospice is based in Esher, Surrey. They have just finished building a large development project which has extended the existing building and facilities. The Caron Keating Award will provide a consulting room for complementary therapies that will be named in Caron’s honour. www.pah.org
St Luke’s Hospice – £18,000
St Luke’s Hospice has cared for the people in the surrounding areas of Plymouth for fourteen years. They are aware that emotional support can stop for relatives and carers prematurely and they continue this support with holistic care. The grant from the Caron Keating Foundation will enable more training for volunteers and will enable a co-ordinator to organise this service in the most efficient manner. www.stlukes-hospice.org.uk
Northumberland Hospice – £10,000
The grant to the Northumberland Hospice will aid the people of Northumberland to have help and advice with lymphoedema locally in order that they do not have to travel the long distances into Newcastle town. St David’s Foundation Hospice Care – £10,000
There has been an increase in demand for services for terminally ill patients in Monmouthshire, Wales. The Caron Keating Foundation grant will enable St David’s Foundation Hospice Care allow complementary therapies into patients’ homes. Slide Away – £5,000
Slide Away serves a very important service in Kent. They have developed courses and workshops to go into schools in order to help teachers, friends and families. It is important to know how to treat the behaviour and emotions of recently bereaved children. Cancer is a devastating disease which causes ripples and fear; workshops enable everyone to share their emotions and increase communication at a very difficult time. The Caron Keating Award will enable them to extend their service for this and help with their aim of National Awareness.
Ulster Cancer Foundation – £10,000
This free phone service in Ulster, Northern Ireland, is specifically for Cancer patients and their families, the majority of whom have been touched by breast cancer. Specialist nurses give practical and emotional support and this service can be extended with the help of the above grant from the Caron Keating Foundation. www.ulstercancer.org
Action Cancer – £25,000
The Big Bus Project started by Action Cancer is now up and running as a mobile breast screening unit within Northern Ireland. A double decker bus has been cleverly converted into a mobile unit. This is the only mobile breast screening unit in this part of the world and it serves an invaluable purpose. The Caron Keating Award will fund a radiographer who will be able to perform the scans. Breast screening is an essential service in the work for prevention of Breast Cancer and this is a very worthwhile project.
